These 5 Foods Would Help Eliminate Chronic Mouth Odour

As you may know, mouth odour can be very embarrassing and offensive. There’s nothing worse than meeting someone and realizing that your breath smells like your tuna. Why there are many causes of bad breath’ did you know that certain foods can keep your mouth fresh?

This article will cover what the common causes are and how it can be managed, especially making use of some of the foods we eat.

WebMD which is one of my favorite and informative site, simply put it that Bad breath, medically called halitosis, can result from poor dental health habits and may be a sign of other health problems.

Not brushing and flossing your teeth after meals can keep food remnants in your mouth and between teeth. Bacteria will grow on these remnant, they decay and lead to bad odor coming out of your mouth. Also poor dental hygiene can cause good amount of bad bacteria to good ones.

For healthy individuals, food odors are temporary and normal salivary flow will eliminate them within several minutes. However, those who suffer from dry mouth can not escape bad mouth odour. So let us see some ways we can eliminate it with certain types of foods.

To get started, you may want to get rid of bad bacteria in your gut first. The first step towards this is to first eliminate foods that may make mouth odour worse by causing poor balance of bacteria in your gut.

  1.  Use Antibiotics: They not only kill bad bacteria, but also destroy the beneficial organisms in your gut. This means that you have to replace the good/beneficial microorganisms after the antibiotic treatment. So, you only need to do this when absolutely necessary.
  2. Fermented Foods: The next step is to eat fermented foods such as such as cheese and yoghurt, fermented vegetables (including cabbage, turnips, eggplants, carrots), and fermented soy. These cultured foods have the ability of supplying your gut with billions of beneficial bacteria.
  3. Sugarless candies and gum. Any snack that increases saliva flow in your mouth, like sugar-free candy or gum, will help reduce odour in your mouth. The plant essential oil that’s often used for flavouring cinnamon gums and candies, known as cinnamic aldehyde, can reduce odour-causing bacteria.
  4. Wet your whistle with water. A dry mouth can make your breath pretty unbearable. In some ways, water acts like artificial saliva, since it can wash away those leftover bits of garlic bread. Keep a water bottle in your workspace your colleagues will likely thank you for it.
  5. Green tea. Green tea contains catechin, a powerful antioxidant that can fend off bacteria — remember, bacteria causes the unwanted odor.

Taking supplements should only be done to support or compensate for a nutritionally deficient diet, as you can mainly get the nutrients your body needs from the food you eat. Probiotic supplements are a great option if you don’t consume raw organic vegetables on a daily basis.

So below is a list of some fruits with the right amount of sugar you can eat and fruits with the amount of sugar it contains to beware of.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes
A single tomatoes contains about 40% of daily vitamin C, A and K requirement. And research shows you’d be better off eating tomatoes every day because it conntains Lycopene, a member of the vitamin A family which helps maintain prostate health. Try eating more by making homemade tomato sauce to top chicken, sandwich, and stuffed peppers.
Total sugar 2.6g

Avocado

Avocado
You won’t have to worry about your sugar intake when it comes to avocado; but be mindful of the fat. Because it’s packed with the good monounsaturated fat, it’s still high in calories, which can sneak up on you if you’re trying to lose weight.
Total sugar 0.7g

raspberries

Raspberries
These bright little berries are nutritional powerhouses. Not only do they quence your sugar cravings (without overloading your body with fructose), they also satisfy your hunger and keep you feeling full longer thanks to their high fiber content. Oranges
Oranges are naturally high in sugar, so it’s a wise idea to eat an orange rather than drink its juice. The fiber is pretty much entirely removed by the process of juicing, so it can’t slow the absorption of sugar and thus stabilize blood sugar levels. Grab a small orange, though, and you’ll reap the benefits of vitamin C (known to lower blood pressure and the stress hormone cortisol) without rocking your blood sugar too much.
Total sugar 9g

Pineapple

Pineapples
You can taste the sugar in pineapple—it’s pretty obvious. But, it’s also the perfect addition to veggie-based smoothies because it’s got such a strong, sweet flavor. Pineapples are also the only known source of an enzyme called bromelain, which is credited for reducing inflammation in the body. Total sugar 10g

Apple

Apples
Apples are a classic power fruit because they contain fiber, some of which is soluble fiber called pectin, which forms a gel in your stomach that slows the rate of digestion. This means that, while apples are a bit high in sugar, your blood sugar won’t spike as much.
Total sugar 10g

banana-smoothie

Bananas
Bananas are loaded with digestible carbs that can fuel your workouts before you get moving and potassium to help you recover after exercise. But, they’re full of the sweet stuff and can raise your blood sugar levels since they’re mostly made of carbs and water.
Eat your banana with a fat, like nut butter; fat can slow the absorption of sugar by inhibiting how quickly food passes from your stomach to small intestines.
Total sugar 12g

red-grapes

Red grapes
Red grapes, which is the highest in sugar, contain resveratrol, an anti-inflammatory compound that helps keep your skin looking healthy and can convert excess white fat into calorie-burning beige fat. Grapes are great as it is, or frozen; just be mindful of the portion size.
Total sugar 15g

Please note that there are optimal times to consume fruit. If you’re really looking to limit sugar, make sure you’re not eating overly ripe fruits. The starch begins to turn into simple sugar as it ripens, which is why it tastes sweeter. So, try to eat them before they become super saccharine and soft to the touch. And, easiest of all, opt for fruits that are naturally lower in sugar or highest in fiber.

Reasons Why You Should Add Coconut Oil To Your Hot Coffee And Every Meal

Do you know that coconut oil can be extensively used in a cup of hot coffee or tea?  Surprised! Oh yes it is not just for dressing salads and baking only.
Coconut oil has become a darling of the whole food movement with good reason. It’s now considered a healthy fat and has antibacterial properties. It also tastes delicious in baked goods or  on vegetables before roasting.

Here are 3 reasons why we love it –
Why Coconut Oil?
1. Cooking with coconut oil, which is mainly a saturated fat, is ideal because it’s able to withstand higher temperatures than other oils (perfect for slathering on roasted veggies and using in stir fries).
2. Although it’s a saturated fat, studies have shown that the saturated fat in coconut oil is mostly lauric acid, which means it has a more neutral effect on long-term heart health.
3. Coconut oil can be substituted one for one with butter in baked goods, making the results taste a bit lighter and with a touch of coconut.

What Should I Buy?
There are two kind of coconut oil widely available commercially: “virgin” or “extra virgin” — or cold-pressed coconut oil — that contains antioxidants and has a stronger coconut flavor and aroma; and refined coconut oil — “expeller-pressed” — which is more processed and has a more neutral taste and scent and a higher smoke point than virgin. Both cold-pressed and expeller-pressed coconut oil can last about two years without refrigeration stored in a cool, dark place, but there are so many ways to use coconut oil I doubt you’ll have any hanging around that long.

How Can I Use It?
Use refined coconut oil for pan frying: preheat the oil in the pan to 350℉-375℉ and try it in your favorite fried chicken recipe. Or toss vegetables in a tablespoon of coconut oil and roast until lightly browned. Vegans will love using coconut oil as a sub for butter in dessert recipes.
Remember that coconut oil has a melting point of 78 degrees, so if you’re in a warm climate your oil may be liquid at room temperature. You may have to gently warm your coconut oil in the microwave or stove when a recipe calls for a liquid fat.

10 Reasons You Need A Sugar Detox Urgently

One of the most insidious ways the food industry poisons us is by dousing all sorts of foods with “added sugar.” By “added sugar,” I’m talking about any sweetener that doesn’t occur naturally in a food. It may seem innocent, but what added sugar does to the body is shocking.

Added sugar is one of the biggest harm to our current health crisis, and can be implicated in many cases of obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer – but its detrimental effects can take years to surface. It’s the hidden link to so much pain and suffering our body is experiencing.Sugar is in practically every packaged food in the store and at restaurants.

Most recently, an industry front group funded by Coca-Cola, General Mills, Kellogg’s, was exposed for commissioning a scientific review that attacked health advice to eat less sugar. Perpetuating false nutrition and health information for the sole purpose of profits is absolutely ridiculous.

These very companies are all big offenders of adding sugar to their products. Should we all just keep eating sugar-laden foods because the junk food industry says it’s okay? Of course not.

So with these Ten sugar detox tips, now is the time to be our own health advocates by limiting the amount of added sugar in our diets for optimal health.

  1. You’ll shed some weight – and maybe a lot of it.
Sugar makes you gain weight by adding empty calories to your diet and jacking up your blood sugar – two processes that form excess body fat. It also screws with your appetite. Ditching sugar is one of the fastest and most effective ways to lose weight!
  2. You’ll look years younger.
Sugar destroys your skin and makes your skin wrinkle. In a process called glycation, sugar molecules attach to collagen and elastin, two proteins that keep skin looking young, and create Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs). AGEs weaken your skin’s support structure and lead to lines and wrinkles.
  3. You’ll stop harmful inflammation in your body.
Refined sugars processed from cane, corn, such as table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup are the baddest. so when you indulge in these sugars, you get no nutrition and your body becomes more acidic. These sugars causes more inflammation. When your body stays in a state of inflammation, you are at a greater risk of developing various chronic diseases ranging from cancer, to heart disease, to digestive disorders.
  4.  You’ll protect your liver from disease.
Excessive sugar intake causes the liver to produce fat in a process called lipogenesis. This can lead to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (in which your liver fills with fat), putting you at risk for chronic diseases.
  5. You’ll spend  less time in the dentist chair.
Continually exposing your teeth to sugary foods and drinks erodes away your teeth. The bacteria that is naturally in your mouth feeds off of sugars in your diet, producing acids that attack the enamel on your teeth and demineralizes them, eventually leading to cavities and tooth loss.
  6.  Your energy will soar.
Added sugar makes your blood sugar go sky-high – a reaction followed immediately by plummeting blood sugar. That crash and burn triggers feelings of irritability, depression, and leaves you exhausted until you get your next sugar fix.
  7.  You’ll protect your brain power.
A study conducted by the University of New South Wales concluded chronic sugar intake triggers changes to hippocampus the area of the brain, which is important for both memory and stress. Another UCLA study found a high sugar diet sabotages learning and memory ability. A 2012 Mayo Clinic study found that people who eat a lot of sugar have a much higher chance of cognitive decline as they age.
  8.  You’ll get sick less often.
Sugar intake weakens your immune system, so you’re at a greater risk of coming down with something. Increased insulin levels from consuming sugar also tells the body to release cortisol – a hormone that further weakens your immunity.
  9.  You’ll be less likely to have a heart attack.
A 2015 scientific review in Mayo Clinic Proceedings warns that refined sugar in the diet is a principal driver of heart disease. It’s now come to light that back in the 1960’s the sugar industry paid leading scientists to discredit claims about sugar and heart disease and to paint fat as the enemy instead. That is when the low-fat craze began, causing most people to correlate heart disease with excessive fat consumption. These dirty tactics played by the industry have literally destroyed the health of millions, and I’m so thankful that the truth about sugar and its role in heart disease is getting out!
  10.  You’ll develop a distaste for sugar – making cravings disappear.
If you develop this habit to stay away from added sugar and practice it on a regular basis, you’ll be less likely to go overboard when presented and tempted with refined sugar desserts. Even more, you’ll naturally eat less sugar in the long run because your body is getting real nutrition from food that hasn’t been chemically altered. Eventually, you’ll develop a distaste for refined sugar and your desire for ultimate nutrition will become instinctive. What a wonderful habit to develop and keep for life!

It has become clear that sugar is an enemy that prevents us from achieving optimal health and the fit bodies we want. Isn’t it time to get added sugar out of your diet NOW?

Best Ways To Store Irish Potatoes In The Kitchen

Reader: I love Irish potatoes but it is a challenge storing them as they get spoil easily. Please advise.

If you are buying potatoes and do not have a place to store them under ideal conditions, please purchase only the quantity you will consume in a few weeks or days.
I also had a challenge storing them because I love using them for fries but since I discover the best ways, its been safe. So prepare the location in advance before buying.

Steps to Store healthy Potatoes

  1. Lay your potatoes in a tray or table in a cool, dark place.
  2. Let the potatoes sit this way undisturbed. After about two weeks, the potato skins will be thickened and dry.
  3. Raise the temperature to 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit ,slightly higher than normal for storage.
  4. Don’t store cut potatoes in the open. Once you cut potatoes, cook them as soon as possible. The exposed flesh of the potato doesn’t keep well compared to the tougher skin.
  5. Don’t store potatoes near fruit. Many fruits, like apples, pears, and bananas, excrete a chemical called ethylene. This gas encourages ripening — you may have noticed that your fruits tend to ripen faster when you keep them next to each other. so store your fruit elsewhere.

Benefits Of Garlic And Honey Tonic

Jamaican Pork Sauce (Recipe)

As the holidays  approaches fast, I think of something different, spicy yet unique to prepare at home. So I came across this Pork meat meal and I begin salivating. Oh how I’ve missed the sweetness of this meat dearly.
One thing I have closely observed online is that majority of those that talk about pork are from Jamaica and I think Jamaicans love for pork meat is expressed in the way they add pork to most of their meals, and the most popular way they have it is in stewed form.

Jamaican style pork stew is different from the European or American version. While the American pork stew has lots of vegetables, the Jamaicans love sugar browning for baking in their pork meat.

5 Ways You Can Spend Less On A Vacation

The holidays are around the corner and many families have either traveled for their summer vacation or are getting ready to do so. With the Naira increasingly under pressure, it is important to avoid unnecessary expenses that just make your travel experience regrettable. Here are practical examples of keep our expenses in check.  This is based on personal experience and that of others.

Airport shops
Experience they say is the best teacher. If you have ever bought anything as little as bottle water at any of the airport shops you would agree with me that the prices are outrageous. While experience shows that some things you buy at the airport may be cheaper than they are in town, it doesn’t apply to everything. In fact, they are pretty much expensive when compared to discount shops or outlet malls. Don’t ever think you are getting a bargain when you buy things at the airport.

 Pack your food
As weird as it may sound, packing your own food helps you to save money and time, especially while you’re traveling. A typical meal that you can pack will include a sandwich, chips, fruits and fried meats or chicken. This is so much cheaper than having everyone go into a popular fast food restaurant and order a large meals. Packing your own food helps you to save money and time, especially while you’re traveling. I tried this and it really helped me save some cash. Typically I prefer packing fried/ grilled chicken and chips.

Find restaurants where kids eat free
Sometimes, we could include the children in the vacation and this could mean more expense, so before you leave on the trip, Do a search online for the town we will be in that day, followed by the words, “kids eat free.” OR ” restaurant with discount for kids” There are websites that regularly update which restaurants gives discount for kids.

Telephone roaming
When you travel abroad, especially for the first time you should remember you pay about ten times the cost of making calls if you were in Nigeria and also pay for calls that you receive. Also, Text messages are also about ten times what it cost. Data roaming is even more expensive. The easiest way to avoid telephone roaming while on vacation is to get a new SIM card when you get to your destination. For data roaming you can go to the settings of your phone and simply switch it off.

Drive, instead of fly
Most of the time, if you are traveling with a family, it will be much less expensive to drive, instead of fly. We like to research where the cheapest gas prices will be and fill up in those locations. We have also researched how to save money on gasoline and have implemented many of these tactics while traveling.
